As a digital marketer myself I have been around the advertisement software scene for a long time now. Needless to say, I have tried a lot of programs over the years, and truth be told, not many of them were as flexible or as affordable as this one.

Some time ago, I had the opportunity of using this software for an upcoming advertisement project, and I’ll be basing my experiences of it in terms of interface, visuals, audio, and text features.

As I had mentioned before, the interface can be quite complicated to use at first, even by marketing veterans. So, when I first opened up the software, I wouldn’t be lying if I said that I was completely overwhelmed by it.

The menu bar is generally housed at the top, containing around twenty different buttons, with the timeline just underneath where one can add scenes or even modify the media. But the layout of the area will change depending on what you are working on.

However, it’s more convenient to drag and drop scenes from the library itself than to use the ones you already have.

The bottom half of the editor would change depending on whether you will be editing a particular scene or not. But, when not editing, you can add media from various sources, irrespective of their format.

And here is exactly where the versatility of the software kicks in. Depending on the type of media that you use to add to the scenes, the editing options will vary.

The timeline feature is a very unique aspect of Explaindio. It permits the rearrangement of media within the scenes themselves, ‘support overlapping media’ and also help create gaps as required.

Each item in a scene is conveniently represented by a row on the timeline. The gray line will show how long the animated media is, and you will be able to easily drag it along the timeline to adjust when it can appear on the screen and when not.

Media stacking, is another useful feature of the timeline. It represents the order in which each media will appear in a scene.

Selecting one, will automatically add it to the canvas along with the premade animations that come with it. However, you can also opt to go for a lot of bitmap images like PNGs and JPEGs for your project.

By using Pixabay to insert the images you want into your computer, and as Explaindio integrates with it very well, the images will automatically get drawn onto the canvas.

Unlike most of the whiteboard programs, this one creates a separate path for the image, and then draws it quite similar to an SVG.

This is something that I absolutely love about the software. Any Bitmap JPEG that I uploaded automatically got converted to a whiteboard type drawn animation. However, GIFs do not work all that well with it; the image appears, not the animation, but, it isn’t all that much of an issue for me.

I tried adding some videos to my content as well. This is where it can get a bit tricky for some of the newer users.

After uploading the video, you might think that it has failed as you will see a white screen on the board. But, that is not the case.

Explaindio will generally take the first frame of the video as a preview, and the actual animation will appear on the timeline, and it will play inside the content that you’re creating.

You can also attach some animation or even animation slides onto your videos. Though this is something I rarely do, but when I did use the animation slide library of the software, I was pleasantly surprised.

Its library is pretty interesting, and inserting new slides on the canvas is rather easy.

However, when it came to editing those slides on the canvas, I did encounter some problems. I didn’t know how to go about doing them, and neither were the tutorials of any help.

But, this is where their Explaindio’s fantastic customer support came in. Upon contacting them they guided me through the entire process and even explained how easily I can remove the existing text from the slide and fill in my own.

When it came to adding 3D files to my content, Explaindio fell quite short of my expectations. Its default library had just six pre-loaded files and just one extension, but with no preview option.

I had to manually set them each onto my canvas and then remove them after. All six of them were quite useless to my project, and it didn’t even allow me to use my very own third-party files as a replacement.

For my own 3D files to work, they need to be a ‘zf3d’ format, and in all my years of dealing with CAD programs, I have no clue as to what that is, or how it even works.

A content’s audio is what brings it to life and makes it so very appealing to the viewers, and Explaindio will help you integrate any sort of audio file you want onto your content.

However, one major gripe that I do have about this feature is audio recording and audio library.

The audio, especially the voiceovers, that I tried to record in the program were not allowed a do-over. I had to get each of them right in the first try or risked starting over from the very beginning if I misspoke or stuttered mid-sentence.

To rectify this inconvenience I needed the aid of a third party app like Quicktime or Audacity, but that was not something which I wanted to do.

Additionally, the default songs and music that was present in their library were unsatisfactory, to say the least. All fifteen of the tracks sound almost identical to each other, and I can’t imagine a single marketing project in which I’ll be able to use even one of them.

When it comes to picking audio with this program, you are definitely going to be on your own. Either select files from your own library or do voice overs with the aid of third-party apps.

Text is often not all that important in any of my marketing videos. Though I at times need it for some statistical charts, captions and event descriptions, I hardly ever prefer it over audio.

However, I did try out Explaindio’s text feature, and I found it to be surprisingly versatile in its approach to editing, color schemes, FX and kinetic texts.

Being able to import your own font is another excellent feature to have. So, if you don’t find the font that you are looking for in the software, you can always import your favorite ones as a TTF file.

I was able to make an abundance of entry and exit text animations for my content as well. Text editing is made much more easy and convenient in Explaindio video creator 4.0 than it was in 3.0.

I love seeing how the video I am making comes together in the end, how all the various elements join to form a complete whole and convey a message.

For some reason, the completion and the export part of video making always remind me of Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction.’ Where all the seemingly unconnected scenes are found to be connected by the very end, the same goes here as well.

Explaindio offers two ways of exporting your video; you can either export the entire clip or just a single scene. This is quite convenient in my opinion and can help a lot of marketers in the long run.

To export the entire video, clicking on ‘create video’ will bring up the export dialogue prompt which offers various options from file destination to file quality and size. The export speed will primarily depend on your computer’s processing speed and the quality of the file you chose to export.

Additionally, there’s an option to add a watermark to the background as well.

Exporting particular scenes, on the other hand, is almost exactly the same, you just click on “create video from this scene,” and you’re all set.

In terms of competition, I would like to pit Explaindio video creator against one of the most popular video softwares ‘VideoScribe’. This is something a lot of my friends ask me to clarify for them, which is better between the two.

I’ll try to take a more logical path here and say that each software is flexible and versatile in its own way, and picking one between the two will depend on your preferences more than anything else.

Explaindio will best fit an internet marketer such as myself, who has a long list of clients who want complex animations within every video.

VideoScribe, on the other hand, will suit educators the most; like my wife Marie, who is a high school teacher. Her school hosts a lot of awareness and safety campaigns every month, and as she is head of the planning committee, she needs to come up with a lot of videos related to the theme.

As she just needs a single video in the whiteboard style, she uses VideoScribe a lot because of it. It’s also much easier to learn, along with having a very user-friendly interface.
